considering the problem at hand
Jun 22 2006, 1:28 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 22 2006, 1:28 PM EDT
for now it looks like the project will be on hold, until i can find out why my IP was banned (i would guess it is on the host side). While I am going to be kicking around other possible ways to gather the data, that the host might be more kind too.....

If any of the other projects would like to discuss how they get their data (the time to gather, how they do it, etc etc), or perhaps a collaboration joining our ideas into a single location feel free to contact me. I believe my email is available to other members, or you can simply comment here.

thanks!

I thought that ip banning was a manual thing, but I'm not that familiar with managing a server actually, so I'm probably wrong..
I can't even be of help with data pulling I'm afraid, since my friends finder calls the apis "dinamically", just when needed. Your way must definitely be server-stressing :(

Quite a useless comment so far, so I add that I'm very well inclined to collaborations and such, I guess two heads are always better than one, right?

Two heads are better then one, that's exactly what I was thinking when I wrote that. So depending on how well we would fit together I would be glad to work together. Feel free to contact me at: squidpunch@gmail.com or AIM:squidpuncher, if you want to discuss how or what we would be working on together, either with FF or something else. The leaderboards are going to be on hold, at least until we test some less intrusive ways of getting the data needed to display those statistics. Daytime I am full time employee, and night time I am a full time Husband and Dad. So sometimes the time I spend on projects is thin.

I am not sure the data pull would be that taxing on the server, but since it was multithreaded the number of requests fired at the same time apparently raised a very big red flag.

So if you only use the APIs to get the data you need, how do you select the friends to compare me with, or is that somewhat of a random selection of gamertags?

Unfortunately the only way you know who is on top is to check ALL the scores, and it wouldnt even be possible to do that while the page was loading. That was part of the reason I was hesitant on building this project in the first place, because to be honest it really is just a complicated way to display a simple result. The complication is pulling all the data from 360voice and putting into my tables for processing, the guys at 360voice could just as easily do the same statistics on there site without the extreme data pull, but it was an interesting challege so I figured I would give it a shot =)

Friends Finder's got much room for improvement so I'd be glad too to work with you starting with that or any other cool idea, if you don't mind my poor english, I'm Italian if you don't already know.. As long as I won't have to actually speak over a mic we should be cool though :)
AIM is usually not an option here, instead, do you use msn messenger maybe?

As for friends finder, I apply some basic filters for "player matching", then the process is somewhat random indeed, why?
1- I was afraid to go the way you did and pull tons of data :)
2- Since the approach of the whole service is not exactly scientific, I didn't want to provide the user with a ranking/leaderboard (this seems pretty useless to me) but rather give him a few different choices and let him evaluate results
3- easier way :P

well I do like how friend finder works, and its nice that it has a random touch to it. Part of the reason i did the whole leaderboard type thing was I was struggling for an idea, and really wanted to do something for a project. We will see how that goes. In any event I do have MSN Messenger as well, I dont use it as much but you can find me at xdavex@hotmail.com

I dont use that email address but that is the address that my msn messenger is registered too. Look forward to talking to you on what we can build together!

PS, I am american and my english sucks, so dont feel bad =)

Hey squid, are you still blocked? I thought we released that days ago? Also, as i wrote in the email, if you give us a little better idea how you need the data, I can create an API specifically for what you need to drive the leaderboard... just email us and let us know. Mail@360voice.com
